NPD: “Nintendo Switch was the best-selling hardware platform of January in both unit and dollar sales”

As always, NPD‘s monthly report is not just for software. they also discuss hardware sales. For January 2020, the Nintendo Switch saw a very familiar trend continue. NPD analyst Mat Piscatella says that the “Nintendo Switch was the best-selling hardware platform of January in both unit and dollar sales”. There was one key difference, though. the Switch’s sales declined year-over-year. However, this decline is not surprising. One year ago, in January 2019, there was a massive surge of new Switch owners that came in following the release of Smash Ultimate. This is obviously no longer the case in 2020, and it didn’t help either that there weren’t any major Switch releases from Nintendo in January 2020. Things should change in March, when Animal Crossing: New Horizons releases.
